Roman Thermal Bath of Curinga

Thermal Bath of Curinga
In southern Italy’s Calabria region, the ancient Thermal Baths of Curinga stand as ruins along the coastline, reflecting Roman opulence and engineering prowess. As the group leader of a team for the “Reuse Italy” architecture competition, we aimed to preserve the thermal bath and create an open space for unhindered movement while maintaining accessibility. Our design honors the historical significance of thermal baths, blending hygienic and social functions. The exterior structure fosters community interaction and offers panoramic views of the ruins, with amenities like an information desk and café enhancing the visitor experience. Open exterior walls ensure a seamless connection with the surrounding context
We’ve crafted a design where visitors progress from a side building to the ruins via a water pathway, simulating the journey to the thermal bath. Inside, our vaulted roof with multiple arches lets in natural light, creating a comfortable atmosphere while paying homage to the original structure. A two-step mesh pathway offers both panoramic views and an intimate experience of the ruins, supported by minimalistic structures to minimize impact. This seamless blend of preservation and accessibility transforms the thermal bath into a social space amid historical surroundings, connecting the past with the present
